Abstract
This study examines the Tausug cultural wedding practice known as Maligay in the town of Jolo. Despite the modern ways of living, this tradition has been continuously practiced by several individuals in southern Philippines for many decades. The concept of Maligay also finds parallels in other weddings practices in Southeast Asia particularly in the Malay Muslims in Sabah. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, this study employed a descriptive case study design, and involved ten diverse participants, including barangay officials, elders, prominent Tausug families, religious leaders, and youngsters. Data collection methods included open questionnaires, diaries, and interviews. Furthermore, the study conducted an extensive review of the literature, both online and using secondary materials, to specifically examine the ASEAN's role in building regional identity, thereby enriching the study's contextual background. By and large, this study has documented that Maligay has multiple purposes during a wedding celebration. Apart from providing entertainment, it is considered a symbolic "gift" for the bride. In certain situations, Maligay also acts as a form of "buffer" in cases of elopement, where it is given to appease the bride's parents. Additionally, some individuals prepare Maligay as an act of charity towards the community. This underscores integral role that Maligay plays within the Tausug culture, closely intertwined with their religious beliefs and moral principles. This research not only delves into the significance of Maligay within the Tausug culture but also explores its connection to the broader Southeast Asian culture. It constitutes a significant component of the overall effort to understand and contribute to the building of a regional ASEAN identity, which forms a central aspect of the researcher’s field of studies within the ground of ASEAN framework
