Biodiversity in Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park: An Assessment of the Adequacy of Current Data

Abstract

This study is aimed at assessing the adequacy of available biodiversity data to support conversation efforts in Puerto Princesa Subterranean River national Park, Palawan Island, Philippines. Eleven studies which were undertaken fom 1993 to 2002 were reviewed.

Systematic species inventories and baseline data generation had been the primary focus of previous works. A preliminary list of plants, mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and some invertebrates can be obtained from these studies. However, there are large gaps of knowledge on the basic biology and ecology of many key species.

Knowledge of the park's biodiversity is limited and is presently outdated.

There is a critical need for a research agenda that is up-to-date, of high quality and not redundant.
