Resilience In A Tropical Coastal Community: The Case Of Anib, Sipocot, Camarines Sur

Abstract

Resilience has been a common terminology constantly used side by side with disaster. However, it is more than that. It can be displayed on a day-to-day living especially on vulnerable areas such as remote communities.

This study highlights the concept of resilience as perceived by a coastal community in Sipocot, Camarines Sur. The study was conducted through a focus group discussion participated by representatives of youth, women, men, and the barangay local government unit. Their collective responses can be summarized into four important aspects of resilience. These are: (1) the concept of resilience is manifested in the daily lives of local communities, not only during disasters; (2) survival is the primary concern when we talk about resilience and this is manifested by economic stability; (3) policies and its enforcement are vital to resilience building; and (4) various community issues are interrelated, therefore solutions must be holistic.
