dc.description.abstract The study was conducted in Kalu Wereda, South Wello Administrative Zone, Amhara Regional State. The objectives are reviewing hazard occurrence due to climate change, identifying the cause of vulnerability and type of coping mechanisms, assess the impact of Coping with Drought and Climate Change Project (CDCCP) in contributing to the food security and resilience capacity of the community and prepare a holistic framework anchored on ecological principles. Interview was conducted on 141 households. The respondents were selected within the population a proportion of targeted Kebeles (Ancahro, Telekea, and Arebo). This study investigated communities’ exposure to drought, frequent flooding, lack of diversified livelihood options, traditional coping strategies, and the effort done by CDCC project. The results indicated that implementation of the project increased household income, asset building, livestock acquisition, improved ecology, expanded protected land, shift from rain fed agriculture to watershed management systems. The irrigation scheme increased from 13% to 43% in the project period. The income generating scheme proved to be effective especially for the women who entirely deployed on livestock raring. Commercialization has contributed to changing the livelihood of the people and enable adapting to climate change.
