Abstract
This study aimed to determine: (1) the capacity and willingness of Sitio Pulo residents to participate in a hypothetical community-based coastal resource management program in their area; (2) the probable success or failure of CBCRM as a CRM tool in managing the remaining mangrove resources in the area in Sitio Pulo, Tanza, Navotas; (3) the socio-economic condition of residents of Sitio, Pulo, tanza, navotas; and (4) the appropriate coastal zone management scheme (whether CBCRM or not) for Sitio Pulo. The methods employed in this research were individual survey, purposive sampling, frequency tables, and one population Z-test. Individual survey using interview schedule was pre-tested and conducted in Sitio Pulo to ask residents about their personal capacity and willingness to participate in CBCRM. Purposive sampling was done among Sitio Pulo residents with ages ranging from 18 to 65 years old. After the survey, frequency tables were used to determine the total number and percentage of mature, able, educated, available, recognized, empowered, and willing respondents in the community. Furthermore, one population Z-test was employed to accept or reject the hypothesis that if majority of the Sitio Pulo residents are capable and willing to participate in a CBCRM program, then the CBCRM program in the area will be successful. Analyses of the survey results revealed that majority of respondents were found to be mature, able, educated, available, recognized, empowered, and willing, which indicates that the whole Sitio Pulo community can be considered capable and willing to take part in a CBCRM program. Hence, it can be concluded that a CBCRM program to be launched in the area has a high chance of success. Furthermore, it is recommended that residents of Sitio Pulo need to be relocated from the area as they can be organized, trained, and tapped to be responsible stakeholders and caretakers of the remaining coastal resources in the area.
