Abstract
Within the broader context of the ASEAN, this study addressed the critical need for feedback on the gender equality (GE) movement by employing a combination of in-depth interviews and a survey approach to investigate the perspectives of 60 qualified Filipino respondents. The research focused on assessing the respondents' level of understanding, degrees of acceptance, concerns, and perceived benefits of the GE movement. Complementary interviews with gender experts and a thorough historical analysis of gender literature contributed to an understanding of the GE movement from a holistic perspective. The study findings revealed that: (1) Respondents demonstrated substantial understanding of GE; (2) The GE movement was perceived as a potentially disruptive force in the society, particularly concerning its deviation from traditional beliefs, including religious practices; (3) The movement raised concerns that were particularly seen as disproportionate to its claimed beneficial impact; and (4) The movement absorbed big public funds without delivering tangible benefits. From the results of the research, it is notable that the primary beneficiaries of the GE movement did not appear to be the affected population. Insights from interviews underscored a common source of ideas, suggesting a link to external influences. Interestingly, survey responses often contradicted the prevailing ideas aggressively promoted in the literature. Regrettably, however, these valuable, dissenting perspectives have either been ignored or not actively encouraged. This study highlighted the critical need for more comprehensive and inclusive dialogues about the GE movement, situated within the specific context of the oriental ASEAN region. It underscores the significance of considering diverse viewpoints to foster a more nuanced understanding and meaningful evaluation of the implementation of GE within the region.
